Ethnically Chinese, born in Singapore to a father with a camera and a music collection and a mother who is a logistician, and with a younger sibling, I spent my childhood preferring my own space.

In my early school days, I was enchanted by my school's backyard garden. I spent a lot of time during recess enjoying the shade of the tree and reading the plant labels, learning the names of ferns and shrubbery. I was also in the science and environmental clubs; we talked about composting, growing insects in terrariums, and keeping fish in tanks.

Growing up in a city, specifically branded as a 'garden city', I was fascinated by the continuous growing and building of gardens, charmed by the view of a tree by my apartment window.

Alongside taking shade under the tree, I prefer reading, now even more so in philosophical ideas, contemplative time, informing the reading of the spaces around me. All the ways I grew up have given me ideas about compartmentalisation and the dualities of living, much like my parents’ work.

I study photography, paintings, and ceramics, all of which inform how image-objects speak to me and their interiorities are revealed in built landscapes rooted in nature.

My studio forms the basis of autonomous work in which I aim to make my photographic practice public. It is where I make Room for research and technical experimentation, supported by producership activities. Alongside my applied work of facilitating photographic workshops, I convene official programmes via Boon Lay Photo Club and Laleil Studio. Each serves to connect people and me socially.
